He works the whole time.

168 通常不用于进行时的动词
?
进行时态主要只用于表示有意识的动作。因此某些动词通常不用进行时态而只有一种现在时态,即一般现在时。这些动词可以分类如下:
A 表示感觉(不由自主的动作)的动词如feel,hear,see,smell;也包括notice和observe(=notic)以及当连词用的feel,
look,taste等。(参见第18节B与C。)
关于feel,look,smell,taste的某些用法,参见第169节。关于hear和see参见第170节。
表示有意识地使用感官的动词如gaze,listen,look(at),ob- serve(=watch),stare和watch可用于各种进行时态:
—Watch!
—I am watching but I don't see anything unusual.
—看!
—我是在看,可我看不出有什么不寻常的事。
He is listening to a tape,but he's wearing earphones so nobody else hears it.
他在听磁带,可他是戴着耳机听的,所以别人谁也听不见。
B 表示感情和情绪的动词如admire(=respect),adore,appreci- ate(=value),care for(=like),desire,detest,dislike,fear, hate,like,loathe,love,mind(=care),respect,value,want,wish等。
但是,在admire意为“以敬佩、赞美或羡慕的眼光看着”,ap- preciate意为“增值”,care for意为“照顾”,long for意为“渴望得到”, mind意为“照顾/使自己关顾到”,value意为“估计事
物值多少钱”,enjoy和like/love意为“享用”和hate表示“很讨厌地干和用着”时,它们都表示了主动的动作,可以有进行时态。但like,love与hate还是用一般时态更为保险:
He's enjoying his holiday in the Arctic.He hates touristy places and he doesn't mind the cold.

I'm minding my own business.

C 表示精神活动的动词如agree,appreciate(=understand),as- sume,believe,expect(=think),feel(=think),feel sure/cer- tain,forget,know,mean,perceive,realize,recall,recongnize,recollect,remember,see(=understand),see through someone
(=penetrate his attempt to deceive),suppose,think(=have an opinion),trust(=believe/have confidence in),understand。
但appreciate意为“增值”时可用进行时。关于think,assume,expect参见第171节。
D 表示拥有的动词如belong,owe,own,possess:
How much do I owe you?
我欠你多少钱?(我该给你多少钱?)
E助动词,但be和have的某些用法除外。
(参见第113节 B,第115节 B和第123节。)
F appear(=seem),concern,consist,contain,hold(=contain),keep(=continue),matter,seem,signify,sound(=seem/ap- pear):
It concerns us all.
它和我们大家都有关系。
This box contains explosives.

但appear意为“公开露面或出现”时则可用进行时。

169 feel,look,smell和taste

A feel
如 feel后面跟表示主语的感情或身体或精神状况的形容词(例如angry/pleased,happy/sad,hot/cold,tense/relaxed, nervous/confident)时,它通常用一般时态,但也可用进行时态:
—How do you feel/are you feeling?
—I feel/am feeling better.
—你感觉怎么样了?
—我觉得好点了。
feel可表示“触摸”(以便了解某种情况)。这时可用各种进行时态:
The doctor was feeling her pulse。
医生正在为她号脉。
同样,feel for意为“摸索着寻找”时,可用进行时态:
He was feeling for the keyhole in the dark.
他摸黑找钥匙孔。
但feel意为“感觉”时不能用进行时态:
Don’t you feel the house shaking?
你没感觉到房子在摇晃吗?
feel意为“想”时,不用进行时态:
I feel you are wrong.
我想你错了。
feel作连系动词时,也没有进行时态:
The water feels cold.
这水(摸上去)很凉。
B look
look作连系动词用时不能用进行时态,例如 That cake looks good(那点心看上去很好)。 look on(=consider), look up to (=respect)或look down on(=despise)也不能用进行时态。(参见第三十八章。)
但 look(at), look for/in/into/out 和 look on(=watch)表示 有意识的主动行为,可用各种进行时态:
He is looking for his glasses.
他正在找他的眼镜呢。
I’m looking out for a better job.
我在找一份更好的工作。
C smell
smell表示“察觉到气味”的意思时,不能用进行时态,如I smell gas(我闻到了煤气味)。smell作连系动词(表示“有……的味道”)时也不能用进行时态。但smell意为“(用鼻子)嗅”时,时则可用进行时态:
Why are you smelling the milk?Does it smell sour?
你为什么在闻牛奶?是不是有酸味了?
D taste
taste作连系动词时,不能用进行时态:
This coffee tastes bitter.
这种咖啡味道苦。(尝起来味道苦了一点。)
但taste意为“品尝味道”时可用进行时态:
She was tasting the pudding to see if it was sweet enough.
她在尝布丁的甜味是否够了。
